LA STATE CAPITOL
SENATE CHAPLAINS REPORT
2009 Regular Session
Rev. Mike Davis, Director of Chaplains

Orange and white PRC Compassion lapel pins seemed everywhere as Pastors and church members flooded the State Capitol during the 2009 Regular session of the Louisiana Legislature.
In committee rooms,
In the café,
In the chamber,
And in the Capitol Prayer Chapel…
The impact of the Body of Christ abounded as prayer went forth and God-filled conversations were held.
Time after time, the day’s opening prayer from a Louisiana pastor found its mark in a Senator or staff member’s heart. Lots of handshakes, smiles, “boy I needed that” and, of course, pictures with pastors followed as the Living Presence of the Lordtouched the men and women serving in the Senate.
Hosting these pastors were members of the Pastors Resource Council’s – Compassion Corps Senate Chaplains. They witnessed the handiwork of God as new relationships between the lawmakers and church leaders were formed and existing relationships were strengthened.
This ministry of presence and proximity is making its mark. Hearts that were cold, indifferent or just curiously unsure are now open and receptive.
By the numbers:
During the 36 days of this fiscal session, PRC Compassion hosted pastors to open in prayer who represent 34 of the 39 Senatorial districts. Those pastors were from nine (9) Denominations and ten (10) non-denominational pastors.
Many of the pastors had little or no experience at the Capitol. The Chaplains conducted “tours and tutoring” on working with the Senators andencouraging these spiritual leaders to pray specifically for their elected leaders. Additionally, a number of staff members gave the Chaplains prayer requests or simply needed to talk during the course of pressure filled days. All in all, the Presence of the Lord was evident as Salt and Light did its work at the Capitol.
Some Comments from visiting pastors:
“My trip to Baton Rouge was an enlightening experience in many ways. I have come to have a great appreciation for the work you do. Your ‘behindthe scenes’ efforts are helping protect our state.” Pastor Don DeLukie, Monroe
“Thanks for providing a great experience for us from FBC Crowley yesterday. It was a wonderful day for us. It was a thrill for me to have that privilegeto pray in that Chamber. Thanks for your insight and encouragement to our folks to pray for our Senators and for your group as you represent the Lord before those elected servants.” Pastor Roger Tarver, Crowley
